State Geography Bee

Congratulations to Gustav Gothberg on competing at the State Geography Bee on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Fawcett Center at the Ohio State University in Columbus. As the Hardin-Houston Local School Champion, Gustav took an online test to qualify for the State Bee. Congratulations Gustav!

Jenna Jarrett signs with Edison State

Congratulations to Jenna Jarrett who signed on Wednesday, March 29th to play NJCAA Division 2 softball for Edison State Community College. Jenna is the daughter of Beckie and Aric Leonard. She is a three year letter winner. Jenna would like to thank her friends and family for all their support through this journey. Jenna is excited to continue her softball career at Edison.

Kaytlyn Riffell signs with Edison State

Congratulations to Kaytlyn Riffell who signed on Wednesday, March 23rd to play NJCAA Division 2 softball for Edison State Community College. Kaytlyn will be majoring in criminal justice. She is the daughter of Jason and Summer Riffell. She is a three year letter winner. Kaytlyn would like to thank her family and friends for all their support through this journey. Kona Ice for LLS fundraiser

Thank you to all who participated in the Student Council’s Kona Ice for LLS fundraiser! Hardin Houston Elementary was presented a check for $626.50 to LLS to contribute to our Pennies For Patients Drive. The students had a great time and were able to make a positive impact on the lives of children affected by childhood cancers.

Power of the Pen

A big "Thank You" goes out to all runners, parent volunteers in the tab room, staff, and administration for a successfully run Power of the Pen Regional competition held here on Saturday February 18th. The results were Houston's own 7th and 8th grade teams racked up points to earn a 4th place out of 21 schools. Congratulations to 8th graders Macy Duhaime who earned a 5th place trophy and Maddy Wills earned 12th place, both out of 50 writers. Next we continue on to the State level in May. An announcement of those writers who qualify will be made at a later time.

Two Hour Delay

Hardin-Houston Local School will be operating on a two hour delay on Friday, March 10th for professional development.

Prom 2017


Houston Juniors present “A Golden Night” to be celebrated Saturday, April 1st at Shelby Oaks from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Candidates for King and Queen will be crowned at 6:30 to kick off the evening’s festivities. Dinner will be served by Spot catering followed by the dance with music provided by Marc Adams of In Reality. Prom tickets are $30 per person and will be available for purchase starting March 8th. The last day to purchase a ticket is March 22nd.

Congratulations to Junior attendants Parker Cox, Hanna Cassel, Dexter Ingle and Sierra Harrison.  Prom King candidates are Cameron Arnold, Kaleib Freistuhler, and Seth Stoodt. Prom Queen candidates are Jenna Jarrett, Emily Picker and Kaytlyn Riffell.

After Prom

The Houston After-Prom Committee is selling tickets to this years after prom event. After Prom will be held at the Apex Sports Zone in Sidney from 11:30 PM to 2:00 AM. Mrs. Swob will be selling tickets in the school office through Thursday, March 23rd. All pre-sale tickets will be $7 per ticket and $10 at the door.

All students planning to attend the After Prom must have a waiver of liability signed by parents to be allowed to enter and participate in the After Prom activities. This can be found on the back of your ticket and or by clicking here.

Information about this years after prom activities along with the waiver of liability was sent to all junior and senior parents.

Chicken Dinner

The Houston Community Classic Committee is raising money for this year's festival. They are selling tickets for a a chicken dinner meal on Saturday March 25th. Dinners include 1/2 a chicken, applesauce, chips and a dinner roll. Tickets are $7.00 each and can be purchased from any committee member or calling 937-381-9093 through March 17th. Committee members are Cori Steiner, Jodie Stangel, Michael and Emily Ginn, Brad and Amy Timmerman, Jason and Beth Shaffer, and Curt and Paula Mohler. Dinners can be picked up at the Houston Community Center on Saturday, March 25th from 4:30-7:30 PM. Unclaimed meals will be available for purchase starting at 6:45 PM.

State Geography Bee

Congratulations to 8th grader Gustav Gothberg on qualifying for the State Geography Bee. As the Hardin-Houston Local School Champion, Gustav had to take an online qualifyng test. The Ohio State Geography Bee will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Fawcett Center at the Ohio State University in Columbus. Congratulations Gustav!

FFA Public Speaking Competition

Houston FFA members Shelby Ayers and Kelci Cooper competed in the state public speaking competition on Saturday March 4th at Marysville High School. Both qualified for the finals with Shelby placing 3rd in the state in her category, beginning prepared and Kelci placing 4th in the state in extemporaneous speaking. Congratulations to Shelby and Kelci!

Winter Sports Awards Program

Houston High School held the Winter Sports Awards Program on Monday, March 6th. Boys basketball award winners were Isaiah Beaver with the Best Defensive Player Award, Quinton Cox with the Wildcat Award, and Cameron Arnold with Best Offensive Player Award and the Rebounding Award. Girls basketball award winners were Jess Monnier with the Best Offensive Player Award, Kara Maier with the Best Defensive Player Award, Sarah Monnier with the Rebounding Award, and Morgan Ely with the Wildcat Award. Cheerleading Award winners were Allie Voisard with the Spirit Award and Emily Picker with the Wildcat Award. Winter athletes that received All League Honors were Cameron Arnold with 2nd Team SCAL and Jess and Sarah Monnier with Honorable Mention SCAL. Congratulations to all winter athletes!

Dodgeball Tournament

The softball team held their annual dodgeball tournament on March 3rd. Twenty-four teams competed for the coveted title of Houston Dodgeball Champions. Limitless Range defeated G.O.A.T. in the finals to complete an undefeated run through the tournament.

Kindergarten Screening

Hardin-Houston Local School will hold Kindergarten Screening for the 2017-18 school year on Thursday, April 6th and Friday April 7th. Times for screening are 8:00, 10:00, or 1:00. Parents can sign up by using the KG screening link on the left side of the page under quick links or by clicking here.

Homecoming King and Queen 2017

Congratulations to Isaiah Beaver and Allie Voisard for being crowned King and Queen during Homecoming festivities on Friday, January 27th. They presided over the Homecoming dance, “A Night at the Theater”, which took place on Saturday, January 28th.

The Court consisted of: senior attendants Kaitlyn Ellison, Ashtyn York, Devyn Ostrander, and Tristin Stangel; junior attendants Morgan Ely and Benjamin Lively; sophomore attendants Addie White and Ethan Knouff; and freshman attendants Brooke Duncum and Joshua Langenkamp. Crown bearers were second graders Aubrey Bodenmiller and Joey Leist.

Homecoming 2017

Friday, January 27th, the 2017 Homecoming Show will take place in the high school gym at 6:00 PM before the Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball boys take on Fairlawn.
The Crown Bearers are second graders Aubrey Bodenmiller and Joey LeistHouston’s freshman attendants are Brooke Duncum and Joshua Langenkamp. Sophomore attendants are Addie White and Ethan Knouff. Junior attendants are Morgan Ely and Benjamin Lively. Houston’s Queen Candidates include Kaitlyn Ellison, Allie Voisard, and Ashtyn York. King Candidates include Isaiah Beaver, Devyn Ostrander, and Tristin Stangel. 
The Homecoming dance, “A Night at the Theater”, will take place in the commons area on Saturday, January 28th from 8:00 to 11:00 PM for Houston High School students and their dates. Tickets for the dance will go on sale on Tuesday January 17th. Tickets are $7.00 each and can be purchased in the office from Mrs. Merickel. Students must purchase tickets at school no later than Friday January 27, as there will be no tickets sold at the door. Students wishing to bring a date from another school must complete a guest form which is available in the office. Guest forms are due by Tuesday January 24.

Mandatory College Credit Plus Meeting

On Tuesday January 10, Houston High School will hold its annual CC+ Mandatory Meeting. It will be held at 6:30 PM in the Commons. Representatives from HHS, Edison Community College, Urbana University, and Wright State University will be on hand. They will present information and answer questions that parents and students may have. This meeting is for any current 9-11th grade students and their parents, interested in earning college credits while still in high school. Again, this meeting is required in order for students to qualify for the CC+ program for the 2017-2018 school year. Any questions, please contact Stephanie Merickel, Houston HS Counselor:
